SONGS WE LIKE
Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds"
by Marta Nelson
Suspicious Minds
We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby
Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?
Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears are real
I'm crying
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die
When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah
Lyrics from lyrics.com
I have a dirty secret that I’ll only admit to a few people: I don’t really care for Elvis or his music. I know, I’ve heard all the
arguments and despite the assurances of several people, I don’t think it will be my one-way ticket to hell. That being
said, ‘Suspicious Minds’ is one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s a great song because it lays it all on the line: the
lyrics are straightforward, the plea is clear and maybe a bit ironic given what we know about Elvis and his philandering
(to be fair, he didn’t write the song). It’s a common enough theme, trust, and the flat-out delivery is why the song still
kicks like a mule and has been covered all over the country scene and probably most popularly by the Fine Young
Cannibals in the ‘80s.
But the lyrics would fall flat without the music, and that’s what drives this song. Elvis’s sincerity, the opening guitar riff
that echoes throughout the song and most importantly the string section, layer together to deliver a sweet, twangy,
soulful punch to the gut. That’s the main reason why I like this song: there’s a time for convoluted lyrics you can’t
make out and dizzying arrays of instruments, but sometimes you just want it handed to you straight, and ‘Suspicious
Minds’ does it every time, which is why I always come back to it. I’ve always thought I’d never give a cheating boyfriend
a second chance, but if he serenaded “Say Anything” style with the FYC version of ‘Suspicious Minds’, who knows, I
might bend. Music is a powerful thing and when it’s got the clout of this song, anything is possible.
