Street Fashion Show, Calgary, Alberta

5 St Underpass, 9 Ave SW
Calgary Street Fashion Show

by Kirk Ramdath

Friday, September 14, a beautiful, bright sunny day in Calgary, Alberta.  Downtown workers stuck all week in their
cooped up offices rush out of revolving doors that they gladly will not have to see for another two days.  They
encounter a unique sight unfolding on the 5 Street underpass between 9 Avenue and 10 Avenue SW.  A large crowd
in a long line is pressed against the wall, seemingly not in a hurry to get anywhere.  Some of those hustling past
must be thinking, “Don’t they know it’s Friday??”  Yet some are savvy enough to pick out a little tingle of excitement in
the air, or some are curious enough to ask.  What was about to unfold in the midst of downtown Calgary was the first
ever Street Fashion Show.

“Since Calgary Fashion Week is leaving us mostly high and dry of, well, Calgary Fashion we've decided to host our
own show," reads the Facebook invitation to the event.  Sponsored by
Community Cloth, the event showcased five
local designers: Dangerkat (Kaiti Pasqualatto); Jennea Frischke & Aleece Coward; Tiffany Wollman; Heather Leslie;
and M ą g oś a C o u t u r e (Margaret Taylor).

The audience was thrilled to some diverse fashion selections, as shown in the pictures at the bottom of this article.
Some were eminently wearable, and some were not, but they all combined to create an entertaining exhibition that
demonstrated to onlookers that creativity is alive and well in the Calgary fashion scene.

Designer Dangerkat was the last up, surprising the audience with her futuristic designs, brought to life by
incorporating dance into her walkway routine, all the while to an attention grabbing electro beat.

Community Cloth promises that the show will not be the last of its kind, so keep your eyes and ears open for news
of future of the Calgary fashion scene, coming to a street near you.
