Heather is a local artist that grew up in Northern Alberta and moved to Calgary to attend Alberta College of Art
after receiving an art scholarship in High School. Her curiosity in different mediums has allowed for a wide
scope of work including ink, pencil, paint, woodwork, beading & textiles. Currently she is focused on painting
and flirts between figurative, fantasy and abstract subject matter. Her artwork can be viewed at Artpoint, Arts
on Atlantic, Calyx Distinctive Arts and her website. Her signature creation is the “Palette Painting” which is
made from recycled paint palettes.

Artist Statement

My passion in creating visual art is in the process of exploration. Whether it is exploring different mediums or
my life lessons, it gives me an opportunity to go on a journey without leaving my studio. It also allows me to
tell stories and share them with the world, making connections with others. It is in these connections that I
find true purpose and keeps me on the artistic pathway.

Palette Painting

These paintings are the result of being unable to throw away my dried up palettes of paint. I enjoy the textures
and the random patterns of paint that are left behind. The process of creating one of these paintings is to look
deeply into the left-over paint to find an image. Once the image has presented itself to me, I enhance it with
paint to bring it out. The images usually reflect a life lesson for me or something humorous.

Council of Five
Medium: Acrylic (palette painting)
Size: 4.5” x 6.5”
"This was one of
the first 'palette
paintings' I created
(back in 2003). It
remains one of the
more popular
images I have
done. I painted the
council to either be
viewed as women
or men and they
represent the many
councils in our
lives, both physical
& spiritual."
The Gift
Medium: Acrylic (palette painting)
Size: 4.5” x 6.5”
The Gift (before)
"The Gift
is one of
my
favourite
palette
paintings,
because I
like to
think we
all have
gifts to
share."
Co-Pilot
Medium: Acrylic (palette painting)
Size: 8” x 10”
Co-Pilot (before)
"This
painting
represents
our “darker
side” and
how
important it
is. I believe
that there
needs to be
balance
between
our lighter &
darker
sides in
order to
navigate
through life."
Laughing & Crying (before)
Laughing & Crying
Medium: Acrylic (palette painting)
Size: 5” x 7”
"I love the colors
in this painting.
This painting is
about the fine
line between
laughing & crying
and how
laughing often
leads to crying or
visa versa."
The Red Cape
Medium: Acrylic (palette painting)
Size: 5”x 7”
The Red Cape (before)
"For all
those
moments
we feel
super
human or
wish we
were."
