Artist Statement
My obsessive interest in poetry and music goes back beyond the haze of my memory. But, because of
circumstances beyond my control, I was not able to pursue them academically. First. there was World War
II. Then I was directly involved in Korean War. I was a Lieutenant in the Korean Army. Then my academic
pursuit in the study of psychology of time, which led to my Ph.D, and academic career, occupied much of
my time, leaving little free time. It was only in recent years that I had peace and time to pursue my works in
poetry and music. Needless to say, I have no formal education in music.
The musician who influenced me the most is J.S. Bach. Then Tchaikovsky who had the audacity to mold
Russian ethnic music into European orchestration. In a way, I have been trying to do likewise:
incorporation of my ethnic music heritage into rational temporal structure.
I usually begin with a simple draft. Then I write into orchestration, mostly for chamber orchestra. The
finished work is, then, digitalized using "Cakewalk" software. Finally, it is transformed into mp3 format for
uploading and downloading. So, the whole process is little different from the traditional way of
composition.
I also pay due attention to what the Minimalists warned: that the temptation for ornamentation and
pretentious provocation are to be avoided. People should not be emotionally provoked. Screaming and
beating a garbage can do that. I am not a peddler of snake oil. There is no need for me to try to get the
attention of the listeners. If they rather fall asleep, it is their freedom to do so and I should raise no
objection. What I am doing is to find some commonality between a composer and a listener.
I have accumulated several pounds of written score. It is my wish that some performers may become
interested in playing them.
"Snow Covered Mountain Pass" is an impressionistic musical verse about the majestic mountain in winter
time. The tonal progression is stark, cold and harsh, with strong human sentiment being expressed in the
background. "Stella" is written to describe a young woman, not in sweet sentimental voice, but rather in
strong and resilient melody. Womanhood is to be admired for its close affinity to life and will to take on the
uncertainty of life. "Adaptation Of Siciliano" is string translation of Bach's dance music for flute. I feel that
flute may be not a right instrument for Siciliano because of its relatively slow "attack velocity." Violin may be
a better instrument if it is softened by guitar. For this reason, I have changed it into a violin-guitar duet.
