James (aka funkdub) started out playing bass in punk rock bands when he was 15 in Bridgewater, located
about an hour outside of the thriving musical city of Halifax. After being exposed to dance music at an all night
party at the age of 16 he fell in love with house and started putting all his money into acquiring mix tapes and
vinyl.
After listening to influences such as Sneak, Farina and Doc, James became adamant about playing in front of
people, so much so that he decided to take matters into his own hands by hosting parties with his business
partner at the local hot spot the Underground and from there moved onto become a resident with Slip Disc
Entertainment that lead to better gigs and a chance to expose his sound to the East Coast of Canada.
Things continued to roll up hill that led him to Atlantic Canada’s premiere Entertainment group (Massive
Productions) where he became one of the company’s first resident dj’s. With this company he has played for
the biggest crowds in the Maritimes and opened for some of the biggest names on the planet including Dj
Dan, John Aquaviva, Bad Boy Bill, Derrick Carter, and Johnny Fiasco.
Last year James decided to relocate to Calgary, Alberta where he acquired a brief residency at the Warehouse
night Club, which is considered by much of the community as the number one dance club in Calgary due to the
caliber of acts that plays every weekend from DJ Sneak to Donald Glaude. Recently Funkdub and partner Jody
Crowe decided to bring the Hustle concept to the West Coast with the help of founders AA and Andy Haigh.
Calgary has allowed Funkdub to broaden his musical horizons to house music that will suit any floor by
incorporating a mixture of chugging Chicago style house music and sultry piano riffs, funky guitar, and nasty
vocal samples. He has recently joined up with two of Calgary’s house music rockers Dylan Leroy and Joshua
Van Nieuwkerk, and another East Coast Ex-Pats Chris Gover and Jody Crowe to form www.almanovamusic.
com, a website showcasing the Calgary house sound.
